Harvest in Winchester in the 1920s

With harvest beginning it's an opportunity to reflect at how different this time of year used to be! These photographs were taken on the farm of Ivan Johnson in Winchester (South Carnamah) in the late 1920s.

In contrast to today the harvest was smaller, slower, more labour intensive and involved being out in the heat and sun all day. All grain was emptied into hessian bags, which were then sewn up and carted to the railway siding. It wasn't until 1936 that wheat bins and bulk handling were introduced along the Midland Railway line.

See our previous blog post The Story of Bulk Wheat Handling for more great photographs relating to this time of year.

The above four photos are but a few from a wonderful album. For the full range take a look at our Avalon Farm, Winchester set on Flickr, or view them as a slideshow on our website.
